Toto Wolff has admitted that Mercedes would not hesitate to impose team orders on George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli if their internal battle begins to threaten the team's overall result. The comments follow an intense Canadian Grand Prix weekend that saw the two title contenders repeatedly race wheel-to-wheel.

The rivalry between Russell and Antonelli emerged as one of the major talking points in Montreal. During the Sprint race, Antonelli pushed aggressively while trying to overtake Russell, running across the grass at Turns 1 and 8 on the same lap. The tension continued in Sunday's grand prix when the Italian locked his brakes at the final chicane and narrowly avoided colliding with the rear of Russell's car.

While the battles provided some of the most exciting racing of the season, Wolff acknowledged that Mercedes was uncomfortable with the level of risk involved. He stressed that the greatest danger was not excessive aggression but rather the possibility of a small mistake resulting in a costly collision that could eliminate both cars from the race.

"It's easy to say afterwards that the battle was great for the team and for the sport. But there is another side that we need to analyse because it was close a few times and it could have ended in a double DNF," Wolff explained.

Mercedes had already conducted internal discussions with both drivers following the Sprint race. However, during the grand prix the team largely allowed them to race freely, issuing only limited radio instructions. The battle ultimately ended when Russell suffered a power unit failure on lap 30, leaving Antonelli unchallenged on his way to a fourth consecutive grand prix victory.

From a performance perspective, Mercedes enjoyed a significant pace advantage in Canada. Wolff estimated that the team's race pace was roughly half a second per lap faster than the main competitors. That margin allowed the team to tolerate internal fighting without immediately compromising its position relative to rivals behind.

However, Wolff made clear that such circumstances will not always exist throughout the season. If the fight between Russell and Antonelli begins costing valuable time or creates opportunities for rivals such as Max Verstappen and McLaren to close the gap, Mercedes is prepared to intervene. In that scenario, protecting team points and championship objectives would take precedence over unrestricted racing between team-mates.

Antonelli's victory in Canada extended his championship advantage to 43 points over Russell, further intensifying the internal title battle. With the championship increasingly centred on the two Mercedes drivers, Wolff expects the rivalry to continue escalating. As a result, Mercedes will review the limits of acceptable racing between its drivers to ensure the championship fight remains competitive without undermining the team's ambitions in either the drivers' or constructors' standings.
