The first day of proper Formula 1 on-track running at the Madring didn't produce the predicted chaos, but it did provide some early winners and losers. The new street circuit, which was tipped to be a cauldron of chaos, instead received largely positive reviews from teams and drivers.
In the practice sessions, some drivers adapted quickly while others struggled. Arvid Lindblad of Racing Bulls was the outlier, triggering a long slide that ended with a right-rear-first smack into the Turn 13 barriers. However, the impact was not severe, and Lindblad remained upbeat.
"It looked quite bad, but actually the impact was not very hard," Lindblad said. "Charles did it in much more spectacular fashion in Monza!" He apologized to the engineers and mechanics for the extra work but remained confident in his pace.
Team boss Alan Permane was remarkably bullish, believing Lindblad's mere 0.228s deficit to the front was a genuine signal. "It's not really mixed emotions, I'd much rather be in 4th place with a damaged car than 18th place with a car with four wheels on," Permane enthused. "There's no doubt the car is quick, very quick, it's properly P4 pace today."
Overall, the Madring circuit has been well-received. Mercedes deputy team boss Bradley Lord said, "We've seen street circuits come and go in Formula 1 - and it feels already like this is one that's here to stay." Drivers like Pierre Gasly and Charles Leclerc also praised the track's challenge and higher-than-expected grip.
With practice done, the stage is set for a thrilling qualifying and race. The early winners and losers give us a glimpse of what to expect in the Grand Prix of Madring.
