Will Power: IndyCar Lapped Traffic Rule 'Ridiculous'

Will Power finished third at the Grand Prix of Portland, but he believes he could have challenged for second place if not for lapped traffic. In his view, IndyCar's current rules are outdated and make racing look silly.

The Andretti Global driver admitted losing significant time behind Sting Ray Robb of Dale Coyne Racing. That moment came after he missed his team's pit call, forcing him to stay out longer than planned.

"I heard something, but not clear enough. Usually the strategist repeats it multiple times," Power said. "I think I missed a pit call there, and it cost us a lot of time. I absolutely got held up massively."

Felix Rosenqvist, who finished second for Meyer Shank Racing, also fell victim to lapped traffic while chasing race winner Alex Palou. He called for a rule change, saying the situation makes everyone look stupid.

"Without sounding salty, I don't think I would have won anyway, but I think it's time for us as a series to grow up and not have the lapped car situation," Rosenqvist said. "I think all drivers probably agree with me."

IndyCar does not implement blue flags like Formula 1, forcing faster cars to overtake slower ones fairly. Power backed Rosenqvist's suggestion for a gentleman's agreement among drivers if IndyCar refuses to change the rules.

"I've said it forever. It's kind of ridiculous we have a 1970s rule going on," Power said. "If IndyCar won't do anything, I think all the drivers get together and have a gentleman's agreement."

Both conceded that nothing will likely change, as it's the same discussion every year. IndyCar resumes on August 15-17 on the streets of Markham for the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy.
