The 2026 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring circuit left fans thirsty for action. Instead of thrilling overtakes, the race turned into a long procession with little change in positions. The new circuit was supposed to be a breath of fresh air, but it raised big questions about the quality of racing.
From the start, attention focused on the track design. A combination of tight corners, narrow braking zones, and close barriers made overtaking extremely difficult. The Race even reported that Madring officials are planning changes to three key corners for 2027 to improve the spectacle. However, a deeper analysis shows the problem is not that simple.
It's Not Just About Layout
Strategy also played a major role. Boring races often stem from low strategic uncertainty. When the fastest route to the finish line is clear, teams tend to adopt the same approach, so there's no pace variation to trigger wheel-to-wheel action. In Spain, that happened because the hard C2 tyre proved incredibly durable.

Pierre Gasly of Alpine was proof. He waited until the penultimate lap to make his mandatory tyre change, meaning he nearly completed the entire race on one set. The transformation from high degradation on Friday to an easy one-stopper on race day was astonishing.

Haas driver Esteban Ocon revealed that tyre behaviour was a limiting factor. "The tyres in the second stint were so consistent that as soon as you followed another car, you lost a lot of grip," he said. "When I was doing blue flags, I was losing half a second, seven tenths easily. Then it came back because it was all about overheating. As soon as the overheating came down, you had pace again. That's why there was no overtaking. The pace was too fast."
Ocon added that if the race had been held on Friday, it would have been much better. "It was like 120% from when you pitted to the end. And because graining didn't happen, that's where we ended up. If we had a race on Friday, it would have been much better!"
Questions then arose: would more aggressive compounds have made the race more exciting? The theory is appealing, but it needs testing. If the hard tyre weren't so thermally and mechanically robust, drivers might have struggled, and strategies would have been more varied. However, as Ocon pointed out, the main issue was the high pace and tyre consistency that made the race monotonous.
In the end, Madring has potential, but it needs comprehensive improvements, not just layout changes. Tyre and strategy factors must be a priority to deliver thrilling races. We'll wait and see if the 2027 changes make a significant difference.
