Why F1 pole shocks like Gasly's are close to extinct

Pierre Gasly produced one of the biggest qualifying shocks in recent Formula 1 history by taking pole at the Italian Grand Prix. Over the past decade, only two drivers from outside the current big four teams – Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull – have managed this feat: Kevin Magnussen's sprint pole for Haas in 2022 and Lance Stroll's top spot for Racing Point in 2020, both aided by unusual conditions.

Gasly's Monza moment was different because it came on merit in dry conditions. The performance spread was tiny, and perfect execution and track position were key. Alpine nailed it while the frontrunners faltered. Such upsets are rare, with only a handful of examples since 2008, like Felipe Massa's 2014 Austrian GP pole or Pastor Maldonado's 2012 Spanish GP stunner.

Alpine's managing director, Steve Nielsen, admitted that the race – where Gasly finished seventh – was a more realistic picture of their pace. Simulations before qualifying suggested a bottom-end Q3 slot was the best they could hope for. "We were just over the cut-off for Q3," he told The Race. "We got good tows, the drivers didn't make mistakes, and we put our best lap together."

The pole highlights how tight F1 has become, where small details like a well-timed tow can make all the difference. However, the big teams still dominate due to their resources and development consistency. For Alpine, this is a testament to their potential, but sustaining such performance over a season remains the real challenge.

As F1 evolves, perhaps we'll see more shocks like this, but for now, Gasly's pole is a reminder that unpredictability still exists in the sport.
