Formula 1, Sportrik Media - The Formula 1 2026 season introduces several technical regulation changes, including a new system called Overtake Mode, which replaces the Drag Reduction System (DRS) that was removed after the 2025 season.
Overtake Mode is designed as a performance aid aimed at increasing overtaking opportunities during races. The system forms part of Formula 1’s new approach to improving on-track battles without relying on movable aerodynamic devices such as the rear wing opening mechanism used by DRS.

Under the new system, drivers are able to recharge an additional 0.5 megajoules of electrical energy per lap. This extra energy can then be deployed through the power unit to provide a temporary boost in speed when attempting to overtake a rival.

The activation criteria follow a similar principle to the former DRS system. A driver must be within one second of the car ahead at the designated detection point set by the FIA in order to qualify for the additional energy.
However, unlike DRS, the performance boost from Overtake Mode is not available immediately. Instead, the extra energy becomes available on the following lap after the driver passes the detection point within the required one-second window.
If the driver fails to overtake and then drops more than one second behind the car ahead when passing the detection point again on the next lap, access to the system will be lost for the following lap.
The introduction of Overtake Mode forms part of the broader power unit regulations for the new Formula 1 era, which place greater emphasis on energy recovery and deployment strategies during races.
By implementing the system, Formula 1 and the FIA aim to create more strategic racing scenarios while maintaining competitive overtaking opportunities without relying on aerodynamic assistance.
