The World Endurance Championship is bracing for one of the most unpredictable rounds of the season as the series visits the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the very first time in the Hypercar era. This penultimate round of the 2026 campaign combines a brand-new venue with cooler weather conditions, creating a massive puzzle for engineers and drivers alike.
The shift to Spain was triggered by the cancellation of the Qatar fixture due to ongoing conflicts in Iran, forcing championship organizers to revise the final stretch of the calendar. Alongside Barcelona's arrival, the season finale has been relocated to Monza. These adjustments altered the championship fight significantly, with European rounds now offering a maximum of 25 points to the winner instead of the heavier 38 points previously available in Lusail and Sakhir.
While LMGT3 manufacturers face minimal friction given their extensive experience at the circuit through GT World Challenge Europe and the European Le Mans Series—with established squads like WRT and others racing there recently—the top tier tells a completely different story. For the Hypercar field, Barcelona is largely uncharted territory as it was absent from the original 2026 testing roadmap.

To bridge the data gap, a handful of LMDh manufacturers including BMW, Cadillac, and Genesis organized a strategic private test session shortly before heading out to Austin. Meanwhile, competitors without track time have relied heavily on factory simulators and technical data-sharing channels to decode the nuances of the Catalan asphalt.
With strategy, tire degradation, and track evolution remaining massive question marks, the upcoming six-hour race promises high strategic tension from the moment the starting lights go out.
