Mark Webber believes the upcoming Gen4 era of Formula E could produce the most impressive version of the all-electric championship yet after the new car was officially unveiled at Circuit Paul Ricard. The former Formula 1 driver expects the combination of significantly increased power, higher speeds, and advanced technology to transform the category from next season onward.

Formula E launched the Gen4 car last week with specifications considerably more aggressive than the current Gen3 machinery. The new package produces up to 600 kW of power, equivalent to roughly 815 bhp, while accelerating from 0–100 km/h in just 1.8 seconds and reaching a top speed of 335 km/h. The figures represent the largest single performance jump since Formula E was established over a decade ago.

The dramatic increase in speed also creates major implications for circuit selection and calendar planning. With a larger chassis and substantially higher cornering and straight-line performance, Formula E may need to reassess several traditional street venues that have defined the championship’s identity. Safety requirements, runoff areas, and energy regeneration efficiency are all expected to become central topics in the next regulatory phase.

“I'm hearing good things about the Gen4 car: very, very, very quick, a lot of power,” Webber told Formula E.

Webber maintains close links to the championship through his role as a brand ambassador for Porsche and manager of Mitch Evans. Having followed Formula E since its early years, the Australian believes the series has evolved into one of the most technically competitive categories in global motorsport.

According to Webber, one of Formula E’s defining strengths remains the extremely small margins separating teams. Energy management complexity, Attack Mode deployment, and powertrain software efficiency have traditionally shaped competitive performance as much as outright speed. However, Gen4 is expected to shift more emphasis toward aerodynamic efficiency, high-speed stability, and electrical power deployment.

“That’ll be the best example of Formula E we've ever seen. No question about it. That's what the drivers want,” Webber explained.

From a sporting perspective, Gen4 is also expected to increase Formula E’s global appeal and strengthen manufacturer interest. The higher performance level could expand opportunities for permanent circuit racing while improving the overall racing spectacle. Formula E is currently entering the final phase of the Gen3 era before the Gen4 machine is expected to debut competitively at the end of 2026.

“The speeds are pretty high at the moment, but obviously it sounds like they're going to be incredibly impressive next year. If the drivers are happy, then generally the championship's happy,” Webber added.

The Gen4 launch now stands as one of the most significant technical projects in modern electric motorsport. As Formula E continues attempting to close the performance gap to elite single-seater categories, the success of the new car could define the championship’s trajectory over the coming years.
