Vowles Praises Madrid Circuit Despite Overtaking Concerns

James Vowles has given high praise to the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring circuit in Madrid last weekend. Despite a race that wasn't entirely smooth, he believes the event has huge potential to become one of the most anticipated on the Formula 1 calendar.

"First and foremost, well done to the organisers," said James Vowles on the latest episode of The Vowles Verdict. "It's the first year of the grand prix, and typically that just means the event is a little chaotic, but it wasn't the case in Madrid."

Vowles highlighted the circuit's location just half an hour from the city centre, easily accessible by metro. The huge space—10 times larger than usual—is a bonus, though he admitted there are pros and cons. "Pros means you can fit more people in. Cons, you wear out your shoe leather walking between the two different arenas," he joked.

However, the race was not without criticism. The lack of overtaking opportunities led many to call for changes for 2027. Vowles acknowledged this. "The track itself is very technical, and the drivers all commented that it was a difficult challenge, an enjoyable challenge. But the racing also suffered slightly, and I'm sure the circuit organisers will be looking into how they can improve that for next year," he explained.

From the team's perspective, Williams struggled. Vowles did not deny that their car's performance is far from ideal. "We knew it was going to be difficult going into it. It's just exaggerating the issues we have at the moment and we haven't added performance to the car for far too long," he stressed.

He also highlighted tyre strategy. On the soft and medium compounds, graining caused a drastic drop in performance. However, the hard tyre proved durable. "That means Pirelli have done a very good job bringing the right tyres to the event, and the circuit, the tarmac, was in a good state as well," Vowles praised.

Nevertheless, he emphasised that the main issue to address is improving overtaking. "Otherwise, well done. Brilliant first race," he concluded.
