When the lights went out in Melbourne for the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, James Vowles may have felt anxious. Not just because of Williams' underwhelming performance, but also because the futures of his two star drivers, Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, were hanging in the balance.

That worry was eased this week. Albon signed a contract extension for 2027, while Sainz, the big-name capture after leaving Ferrari, extended his stay at Grove with a multi-year deal. This decision is a breath of fresh air amidst the storm engulfing the British team.

Williams actually impressed in 2025, with Sainz scoring two podiums in Azerbaijan and Qatar, plus a third-place finish in the Austin Sprint. The team ended the season fifth in the constructors' standings. However, for the 2026 regulation reset, the FW48 chassis has proven to be a step backward. The car was initially late, missed the Barcelona shakedown, and was found to be overweight.

Vowles admitted he feared losing both drivers, whom he called "world championship material." "I was concerned about losing both, because they are world championship material drivers that deserve the opportunity to be fighting for podiums or more, and we haven't delivered that," he told media, including RacingNews365.

Despite the issues, Vowles is grateful that his drivers showed loyalty. "When we had problems; they stood by our side. It wasn't finger-pointing; it was actually: 'Tell me what I can do,' and they both came into the factory and spoke to the whole organisation and gave them a lift," he said.

The decision to stay, according to Vowles, is crucial for three reasons. First, it signals to the outside world that significant changes are underway at Williams. Second, consistency, especially in the driver line-up, is vital for the team's development. Third, the impact is immediately felt at the factory: "There's a weight lifted off it this week. They've moved forward at a much faster pace. The belief is real and tangible."

Improvements to the FW48 are ongoing, with an upgrade package scheduled for the Azerbaijan GP. But with both key drivers staying, Williams can breathe a sigh of relief and focus on building a brighter future.
