Volkswagen is expanding its electric lineup with a familiar nameplate: the ID. Tiguan. Following the ID. Polo and ID. Cross, the iconic SUV now gets a full battery-electric version. The global debut is scheduled for early October, with a market launch planned for next year.
This move underscores Volkswagen's strategy of retaining iconic names in the electric era. The ID. Tiguan will be positioned as the successor to the ID.4 and ID.5, but it will be sold alongside the conventional Tiguan, which still offers petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Consumers will have the freedom to choose what suits them best.
So far, the ID. Tiguan prototype is still undergoing extensive road testing under camouflage. Nevertheless, some design details are beginning to emerge. The SUV is expected to feature Volkswagen's latest design language, which is cleaner and more futuristic, as seen on other ID models.
It's no secret that the Tiguan is the backbone of Volkswagen's sales. Last year alone, the Tiguan and its sibling, the Tayron, delivered over 1 million units globally. That figure makes it the best-selling model for both the Volkswagen brand and the entire Group. This success is what the company aims to replicate in the electric segment.
Thus far, the ID.4 and ID.5 have performed quite solidly. Since 2021, they have delivered over 950,000 units, placing them among Volkswagen's most successful EV lines. The arrival of the ID. Tiguan is expected to boost those numbers, especially with its completely new design and next-generation technology.
Although official specifications are not yet available, the ID. Tiguan is expected to use the MEB platform that has proven itself on other ID models. A large battery capacity and long range are essential to compete in the increasingly crowded electric SUV segment. Volkswagen is also reportedly developing a high-performance version that might carry the GTX badge.
The launch of the ID. Tiguan in October will be a pivotal moment for Volkswagen. They are not only expanding their EV portfolio but also preserving the Tiguan name that has become ingrained in consumers' minds. If successful, the ID. Tiguan could be the perfect bridge between the past and the future of motoring.
