Max Verstappen showed competitive pace in Spanish Grand Prix qualifying but was left frustrated by battery deployment issues that hampered his performance. The Red Bull driver had to settle for a second-row start after Lando Norris took pole position at the brand-new Madring circuit.
Verstappen admitted he was a top contender for pole but repeatedly ran out of battery in key sectors. "I wanted to go flat, but then my battery dies, so I had to lift," he told media including Motorsport Week. His complaint centered on the legendary La Monumental corner with its high banking.
Criticism of Circuit Design
While praising the tarmac's grip, Verstappen felt the layout needed optimization for racing. "I like the grip, they did a good job with the tarmac, even though in some places it's already too bumpy for a new track," he said. He highlighted braking zones that require steering while braking, making overtaking difficult.

"In some corners, you can't overtake. They need to learn that it should never be that you have to steer while braking, because it doesn't allow any overtaking," Verstappen stated. He also suggested that driver input should be considered in future track designs.
Addressing the excuse of limited space, Verstappen argued, "I know they will always come back and say, yeah, but the space, but that's BS. There's always a way to find an overtaking opportunity." Nevertheless, he praised the event organization and the speed of the track's construction.
With a competitive but hampered performance, Verstappen is determined to bounce back in the race. He hopes layout changes can improve racing at Madring. Meanwhile, Lando Norris secured his third pole of the season, adding pressure on Verstappen.
Qualifying was tight, with Lewis Hamilton settling for fourth after Norris's late surge. Another incident involved Carlos Sainz, who was investigated by stewards, but the final result kept Norris ahead. Verstappen now focuses on the race to maximize points.
