Verstappen Jokes About Red Bull F1 Seat for Robin Raikkonen
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Max Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull until the end of 2030

Max Verstappen has humorously suggested that he might have to vacate his Formula 1 seat at Red Bull Racing one day, following the team's signing of Robin Raikkonen, the 11-year-old son of 2007 F1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen, to its driver development programme.

Robin, nicknamed 'Ace', has already made a name for himself in karting championships. He will officially join Red Bull's junior pool in 2027. Verstappen, who is under contract with Red Bull until the end of 2030, revealed that he had a brief chat with Kimi and Robin before the Italian Grand Prix. "I met them before the race on Sunday. They were sitting upstairs, so I had a quick chat with Kimi and with Robin," he said. "It was good. When they were around I had a little chat and I knew that he was signed already. It's good to see."

When it was put to Verstappen that he may not be racing by the time Raikkonen potentially reaches F1, the 28-year-old Dutchman joked: "Yeah, who knows. Maybe, maybe not. I guess eventually they also need a seat for him in the team. So then, yeah, maybe I'll move aside."

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies praised Robin's abilities, stating: "He has already demonstrated exceptional ability in karting. His speed, racecraft and natural talent have established him as one of the most promising young drivers in his age group. At the same time, he impresses with his maturity, his calm approach and his clear focus on driving. Our goal is to develop him step by step, without placing any unnecessary pressure on his shoulders. The path through motorsport is a long one and we will give him the time, support and resources he needs to maximise his potential."

Robin follows in the footsteps of his legendary father, Kimi, who claimed 21 wins and 103 podiums in 349 F1 starts before retiring in 2021. Verstappen, a four-time world champion, understands the pressures that come with being the son of a world champion, but he chose to address the situation with humour, showing a human side to the fierce competitor.

While Robin is still far from an F1 seat, his path to the pinnacle of motorsport is being carefully managed by Red Bull, a team with a rich history of nurturing young talent. The energy drinks giant hopes to replicate the success it has had with the likes of Verstappen, Sebastian Vettel, and Daniel Ricciardo. Meanwhile, Verstappen remains focused on the competitive 2026 season, but his light-hearted comments about his seat indicate an awareness of the natural cycle in the sport.
