Max Verstappen has revealed he was closer to retiring from Formula 1 than joining a rival team. The statement came after Red Bull Racing confirmed a contract extension with the Dutchman, keeping him with the team until at least the end of the 2030 season, announced on the eve of the Dutch Grand Prix.

The confirmation ended months of speculation over Verstappen's future, with Mercedes and McLaren emerging as the most likely destinations. However, Verstappen insisted that retirement was a more realistic option than switching teams, citing his affection for the Red Bull environment as the primary factor.

"I was closer to retiring than changing teams," Verstappen told media including RacingNews365. "I like it here. I think it would be a great story if that were possible, being picked up by Red Bull and finishing your career with one team."

Verstappen, who has secured four world titles with Red Bull, stressed he feels no need to seek new challenges merely for the sake of change. "I don't feel the need to change just to change, and I don't need to drive in another colour. My favourite colour is blue, so that helps," he added lightheartedly.

The new deal provides long-term stability for Red Bull amid intense competition from Ferrari and McLaren. Verstappen's decision to stay also signals that Red Bull's technical project, led by Adrian Newey, remains a major draw for the 26-year-old.

With the commitment through 2030, Verstappen has the opportunity to extend his dominance into the new regulations era in 2026, where Red Bull will use a powertrain developed in collaboration with Ford. This move also secures the team's long-term position amid upcoming regulatory changes.

The announcement is certainly a blow to rivals hoping to secure Verstappen's services. But for fans, the continued partnership between Verstappen and Red Bull ensures one of the most successful duos in F1 history will carry on.
