Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen has been identified as a potential source of significant risk for Formula 1 should he decide to leave the championship at the end of the 2026 season, amid ongoing dissatisfaction with the current regulations introduced by the FIA.

The four-time world champion has hinted at a possible early exit, citing frustration with the new power unit regulations. The current framework, which features a 50/50 split between electrical energy and internal combustion, has altered the driving dynamic, placing a greater emphasis on energy management rather than outright performance.

This shift has resulted in increased use of lift-and-coast techniques during races and qualifying laps that are no longer consistently run at full attack, elements that have contributed to Verstappen’s dissatisfaction during the opening phase of the 2026 season.

1996 Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill believes that Verstappen’s potential departure could have far-reaching consequences for the sport, particularly in terms of its commercial appeal and global market position.

"If Max were to decide he has had enough and walk away, that would present enormous problems," Hill said.

Hill highlighted how Formula 1 previously maintained a dominant position within global motorsport, partly due to the influence of former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, who limited the growth of rival categories. However, the modern landscape offers multiple competitive alternatives, including endurance racing and other major series.

"There used to be nowhere else to go, but now there are options like Le Mans or IndyCar. A driver like Max could choose a completely different path."

Verstappen has already shown interest beyond Formula 1, particularly through his involvement in GT3 racing at the Nordschleife, which has provided a contrasting experience to the current F1 environment.

According to Hill, the departure of a driver of Verstappen’s profile would not only affect competition on track but could also influence the commercial value of the championship.

"If the biggest name in the sport decides to turn away from Formula 1, it would not reflect well on its commercial value," he added.

With regulatory adjustments set to be introduced from the Miami Grand Prix, Verstappen’s response to these changes could play a crucial role in shaping his future. The situation also underlines the broader challenge facing Formula 1 in balancing technical evolution with maintaining its competitive and commercial appeal.
