Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen has dismissed speculation that the 2026 season could be his final year in Formula 1, despite his criticism of the new regulations that significantly alter the character of the cars.
The four-time world champion has been vocal about the new 50:50 power split between combustion and electric energy, describing the concept as “Formula E on steroids” and “anti-racing”. His comments sparked speculation that he could consider a future outside F1.
Last week, the Red Bull Racing driver hinted at pursuing other racing projects, including a possible appearance at the Nürburgring 24 Hours. He noted that the event would allow him to “drive flat out”, something he believes will not be possible in F1 this year due to energy management requirements.
“When you’ve already won and achieved everything, then it [driving in F1] doesn’t really have to happen anymore,” Verstappen previously said. “There are lots of other fun things you can do, and that’s what I’m definitely going to do, maybe already this year and in the years to come.”
However, Verstappen, who still has three years remaining on his contract with Red Bull, has now clarified that his future in F1 is not in jeopardy.
“Everything would have to turn very negative for that to happen, and that’s not the case. I will just continue,” he said.
He also stressed that disliking certain aspects of the new regulations does not mean he wants to leave the sport.
“If I don’t like something, it doesn’t mean I don’t want to do it,” Verstappen explained.
“As a purist and a motorsport enthusiast, I would have preferred it to be different. But I also know I have to make do with this. I can’t change it now, so I always try to get the most out of it.
“I also find it very enjoyable to work with everyone and with our own car. Those are all nice things. Would I have preferred it to be different in terms of regulations? Yes. But this is the reality, so you have to deal with it.”
The comments come ahead of the start of the 2026 Formula 1 season, when the new technical regulations will be fully implemented.
