Max Verstappen couldn't hide his frustration with the new Madring circuit that debuted on the Formula 1 calendar. The four-time world champion believes the track around the IFEMA complex in Madrid offers no room for overtaking whatsoever. "I still need to figure out a corner where to pass," he said bluntly in the post-qualifying press conference.
Verstappen's criticism is not without reason. Although the asphalt is considered good, he highlighted the braking zones that were incorrectly designed. "For the braking zones, they need to learn that it should never be that you have to steer and combine that under braking. It doesn't allow any kind of overtaking," stressed the Red Bull driver. According to him, the design of corners and braking areas that force drivers to brake while turning means there is only one ideal line, making defending very easy.
When asked what exactly needs to be changed, Verstappen laughed: "Almost all the braking zones! If you give me the track map, I'll sort it out." But he seriously added that he would be willing to provide input to the FIA and track designers for future improvements. "They can always ask me, 'What do you think of this layout?' I don't want to go into details now, but sometimes I...

This criticism was echoed by Lando Norris, the polesitter in qualifying. Norris felt the thrill of a single flying lap was entertaining, though not comparable to Monaco. However, he agreed that the extremely long pitlane had not been properly thought through. "I agree with Lando, the pitlane is very long and that hasn't been thought through well," Verstappen added.
Nevertheless, the F2 and F3 races in Madrid produced several crashes, while chaos in F1 remained limited. This shows that the circuit might be challenging for young drivers, but for F1 drivers, the main issue is the lack of overtaking action. With such track characteristics, the race is predicted to be monotonous and dominated by the leading drivers.
The drivers' criticism has become a talking point ahead of the race. If the Madring circuit is not immediately evaluated, it's not impossible that F1 will serve up a boring procession. Verstappen hopes for closer collaboration between drivers and circuit designers in the future. "Input from drivers can help a lot," he concluded.
