Fred Vasseur has spoken out about the persistent rumours linking Christian Horner to his job. In the Baku paddock, he admitted frustration that every press session is peppered with questions about his future at Ferrari.
Since Christian Horner left Red Bull last July, the Briton has been eager to find a way back into Formula 1. His condition: a role that also offers him an ownership stake in the team. However, that prospect has yet to materialise. Horner even stated that the only team he would join without any equity promises would be Ferrari. "Ferrari is the biggest brand in Formula 1. It's the dream. And arguably it's the sleeping giant of Formula 1," he said, as quoted by Motorsport Week.
That statement naturally reignited speculation. Vasseur's name was once again dragged into rumours of a possible replacement. Responding to the suggestions, the Frenchman insisted he would not be distracted. "We are not working in perfect serenity. For me firstly, but for everybody in the team," he said after the race in Baku. "For the media, for 50 percent of the questions [that are] about this, I think it's a bit of a frustrating situation."
Since taking over in 2023, Vasseur has yet to deliver a world championship to Ferrari. Last season, the Maranello-based team missed out on the constructors' title by the narrowest of margins to McLaren. Under the latest technical regulations, Ferrari arguably still has ground to make up, especially on the power unit front, to catch Mercedes. Nevertheless, Vasseur remains focused on his mission: returning Ferrari to the top.
"But it is what it is, it's not in my hands. Mr Horner is looking for a job – that everybody knows – everywhere," he added. "What can I do? Just try to do my best to push the team, to rise them to be motivated, focus on what is better today. Each interview, 25 times a day, we are coming back to this."
When asked if he could be open to working alongside Horner in the future, Vasseur quipped, "You have to ask my assistant." He then stressed, "We have still seven races to go, and I will push until the last corner."
Currently, Ferrari are locked in a battle for P2 in the constructors' championship with McLaren. The next race is the Bahrain GP at the Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia. A tough challenge awaits, but Vasseur seems resolute: all energy is devoted to the Scuderia, not to endless rumours.
