Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Valtteri Bottas will not serve a grid penalty at the 2026 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix after a regulation change introduced by the FIA ahead of the new season.
The Finnish driver is set to make his Formula 1 return in Melbourne with Cadillac, as the American manufacturer begins its debut campaign in the championship as the newest team on the grid.
Bottas had been widely expected to start the season at a disadvantage due to an outstanding grid penalty carried over from his previous race appearance. The penalty originated from an incident during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2024.

During that race, Bottas received a time penalty following an on-track incident, but he retired before the penalty could be served. Under the regulations in place at the time, the sanction was converted into a grid penalty to be applied at the next grand prix in which he participated.
However, the situation changed after the FIA updated the Formula 1 sporting regulations ahead of the 2026 season.
Article B2.5.4(b) of the updated rules states that any outstanding grid penalty is only valid for a 12-month period, provided the cumulative penalty does not exceed 15 grid positions.
The updated regulation states:
“Classified drivers who have 15 or fewer cumulative unserved grid penalties for the race imposed in the previous twelve months will be allocated a temporary grid position equal to their qualifying classification plus the sum of their unserved grid penalties.”
Because Bottas’ penalty was issued almost 15 months ago, it no longer falls within the validity window defined by the updated regulation.
As a result, Bottas will begin Cadillac’s inaugural Formula 1 season without any grid penalty when the lights go out for the opening race of the 2026 campaign in Melbourne.
