Brian Uriarte stole the show in Moto3 qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix 2026. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rookie used a perfect tow to snatch pole position and set a new lap record at the Red Bull Ring.
In a tense Q2 session, Uriarte initially trailed. But in the dying moments, he latched onto teammate Alvaro Carpe, who was chasing Maximo Quiles. The strategy paid off: Uriarte clocked 1'39.544s, breaking the all-time lap record previously held by Quiles (1'39.639s in 2025). It was Uriarte's second pole of the season.
David Almansa had been impressive since Friday. He dominated both practice sessions and went straight to Q2. The Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP KTM rider led much of the session but had to settle for second, just 0.064s behind Uriarte. Almansa, who also took pole at Misano, missed out on a third consecutive pole.
Alvaro Carpe completed the front row. He had no time set until the final lap, but thanks to the slipstream behind Quiles, he moved up to third. Maximo Quiles, the championship leader, had to settle for fourth. Meanwhile, Matteo Bertelle (Level UP - MTA) shone with a very late lap to snatch fifth, despite having no previous time.
Scott Ogden (CIP Green Power) was pushed down to sixth after being overtaken by Bertelle. Joel Kelso was the top Honda in Q2 in seventh for GRYD Racing. Joel Esteban (Level UP) was eighth, followed by David Munoz (Dynavolt) – the best rider from Q1 – in ninth on his return from injury. Rico Salmela (Red Bull KTM Tech3) completed the top ten.
Valentin Perrone, the 2025 Austrian polesitter, had to settle for 12th after coming through Q1. Hakim Danish (MT Helmets) had a minor off at the start of the session, briefly bringing out yellow flags, and finished 15th. In Q1, David Munoz needed just one flying lap to top the session, while Valentin Perrone and Eddie O'Shea also progressed to Q2. Marco Morelli and Veda Pratama failed to advance. With a new lap record, Uriarte asserted himself as a new force in Moto3.
