Brian Uriarte snatched pole position for the Moto3 Austrian Grand Prix 2026 at the Red Bull Ring, Spielberg, with a lap time of 1:39.544. The Spanish rider edged out David Almansa by just 64 milliseconds, denying his compatriot who had seemed certain to start from the front. The drama unfolded in the dying seconds of qualifying when Uriarte surged ahead, overshadowing the new lap record Almansa had just set.
Almansa was impressive throughout the session. He initially led by three tenths over Quiles and even set a new lap record. However, Uriarte, who had crashed in Q1, bounced back to grab pole. It was a bitter blow for Almansa, who must settle for second on the grid.
Q1 itself was dramatic. David Munoz, returning from injury, immediately surprised with the best time under 1:41, four tenths ahead. But Valentin Perrone then took over with 1:40.502. Crashes for Uriarte and Carraro at the end of Q1 brought out yellow flags, disrupting others. Guido Pini and Eddie O'Shea completed the top four to advance to Q2.
In Q2, the pole fight intensified. Almansa was briefly ahead by 79 milliseconds over Uriarte, then extended his gap to three tenths over Quiles, who moved up to second. Almansa looked to have secured pole with his new lap record. But Uriarte refused to give up. On his final lap, he set a time of 1:39.544 to take pole. Quiles, the championship leader, finished only fourth and missed out on the front row.
This qualifying result gives Uriarte valuable momentum for tomorrow's race. Meanwhile, Almansa must fight back from second, and Quiles, down in fourth, faces a tougher challenge to maintain his championship lead. The Moto3 Austrian GP 2026 promises to be a fierce battle given the incredibly close times among the frontrunners.
