Tyre strategy is expected to play a decisive role in the 2026 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, with track temperatures forecast to exceed 50 degrees Celsius during Sunday's race.

Pirelli has nominated its softest compounds for Spielberg, with the C3 serving as the hard tyre, the C4 as the medium and the C5 as the soft. The extreme heat is expected to make a two-stop strategy the preferred choice for most teams.

The baseline strategy is medium-hard-hard, with the first pit stop projected between laps 18 and 25, followed by a second stop between laps 45 and 55. Another option is medium-hard-medium, allowing drivers to benefit from fresher tyres during the closing stages.

Drivers starting further down the order may instead choose a more aggressive soft-medium-hard strategy, making their first stop around lap 13. Teams could also gamble on a soft-medium-hard-soft three-stop approach, although it carries significantly greater risk.

"There is a three-stop option, again starting on the Soft, which, if well executed, could prove effective. By exploiting the strong undercut at Spielberg, some teams may choose to take the gamble," said Pirelli Motorsport Director Dario Marrafuschi.

Pirelli estimates that each pit stop at the Red Bull Ring costs approximately 20 seconds. As a result, the three-stop strategy will only pay off if drivers can generate enough additional pace on fresh tyres to offset the extra time spent in the pit lane.
