Nikola Tsolov remains at the top of the 2026 Formula 2 standings, but his lead has been cut after enduring his worst weekend of the season at the new Madring circuit in Madrid. The Bulgarian failed to score points in both the Sprint and Feature races, a first for him this campaign.
In the Sprint, the Red Bull junior spun out due to his own error. Then in the Feature, he narrowly missed a top-10 finish, but a car issue dashed his hopes at the crucial moment. Despite this, Tsolov still holds 177 points and maintains the championship lead.
Behind him, Rafael Camara of Invicta has been consistent and now sits just seven points back. The Brazilian capitalized on Tsolov's struggles in Madrid to close the gap. Meanwhile, Gabriele Mini from MP Motorsport is third, 24 points adrift, keeping the title fight alive ahead of the next round in Baku.
The team standings are also far from settled. Campos Racing still leads by 36 points over Invicta, even though they celebrated the Formula 3 title on the same weekend. Their F3 success doesn't allow them to relax in F2, as Invicta continues to apply pressure.
Tsolov's performance in Madrid could be a wake-up call for Campos. The Sprint mistake and Feature technical issue show that the pressure from rivals is mounting. Camara and Mini are now in a strong position to keep chasing, especially with Baku's notoriously challenging circuit up next.
With the points gap so tight, every race is crucial. Tsolov must bounce back quickly to avoid losing momentum, while Camara and Mini will look to seize any opportunity to take the top spot. The battle heading to Baku is sure to intensify.
