Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff admitted he was completely mesmerized by the masterclass lap delivered by Andrea Kimi Antonelli during the Q3 qualifying session at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin. The Italian prodigy snatched a stunning pole position that defied initial expectations, outperforming rivals on a weekend that could shape the championship history.
"Vi dico la verita, avevamo un ospite nel box che mi ha chiesto 'allora, cosa facciamo in qualifica?'. E io ho gli ho detto che mi aspettavo terzo, quarto o quinto posto. E adesso fa la pole io passo per essere totalmente incompetente," Wolff shared during media interviews, reflecting on the humorous yet astonishing moment inside the garage.
The high-ranking Austrian executive emphasized that the sheer pace demonstrated on track was beyond normal parameters, highlighting the exceptional natural talent possessed by the Bologna-born driver as he navigates his crucial campaign in the premier motorsport class.
"Scherzi a parte, per me e stato un giro magico, qualcosa che non in tanti possono fare. Mi mancano parole," he concluded, reinforcing the notion that only a handful of drivers in motorsport history could extract that specific level of performance from the current machinery under maximum pressure.
Despite the celebrations surrounding the Saturday triumph, the team leadership remains cautious regarding race pace longevity and setup stability, pointing out the narrow operating window that continues to challenge the engineering department throughout the ongoing grand prix weekend.
