The commanding performance delivered by Kimi Antonelli during the 2026 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix in Austin has earned high praise from team principal Toto Wolff. The young Italian driver put on a faultless display, dominating the race on a one-stop strategy to secure his ninth grand prix victory of the season by a massive margin ahead of his teammate.
This dominant result, combined with Lewis Hamilton finishing in fourth place, means Antonelli's coronation as the youngest-ever world champion will wait until Mexico. He currently holds a commanding 123-point lead over George Russell and a 124-point buffer over Hamilton, with only 125 points remaining on the board for the remainder of the 2026 season.
Reflecting on the 20-year-old's stellar drive, Wolff boldly declared the Italian as the new world champion in waiting while describing the weekend as his finest masterclass yet. "The main headline is that, for me, it was the best race Antonelli has delivered so far, in getting off the start with the inferior tyre and then controlling it at all times," Wolff told media members in the paddock.
Wolff further emphasized that Antonelli's driving style completely glues with the car, allowing him to consistently outperform the machinery. The Mercedes boss also shed light on the rigorous nine-year journey, extensive engineering integration, and the millions invested in developing the young talent from his karting days to the pinnacle of motorsport.
While preparations for a celebratory party in Mexico City or Sao Paulo are already underway within the garage, the team remains fully focused on officially crossing the finish line and sealing a historic championship campaign.
