Toto Wolff Calls Mercedes Result Bittersweet

Toto Wolff described Mercedes’ British GP 2026 result as bittersweet after major drama affected both of its drivers at Silverstone.

George Russell was forced to pit with a slow puncture while fighting over third place, while Kimi Antonelli’s victory hopes collapsed when a front-left wheel shield failure destroyed the handling of his W17. The incidents dramatically changed Mercedes’ race in the closing phase.

Antonelli pitted twice and later received a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits. That dropped him out of the points entirely, while Russell recovered to finish second.

The final result reduced Antonelli’s championship lead over Russell to 25 points, the value of a single grand prix win. For Mercedes, Silverstone delivered a sharp contrast between a rescued podium and a lost victory opportunity.

“As for the race, it was bittersweet,” Wolff reflected to media including RacingNews365.

“There is the sweet part that George, after so many days of struggle and not gelling with the car, was able to secure P2, and on the other side, Kimi had the victory to play for.”

Wolff admitted Antonelli had made major gains on Charles Leclerc late in the race. He said he had not personally believed Mercedes could catch Ferrari, but the strategy data showed the opportunity was realistic because of the large tyre offset.

“He made huge steps towards Charles at the end, and personally, I didn't believe that it was possible, but my intuition was wrong, and the strategy with the data was right.”

“It said we were going to catch him with six laps until the end with a huge tyre offset, and that was on the menu, but then we had the problem with the wheel shield that broke.”

Wolff’s verdict underlines how complex the British GP 2026 result was for Mercedes. Russell’s podium kept pressure alive in the title fight, but Antonelli’s technical failure cost the team a win chance that its own data suggested was becoming available late in the race.
