Action-packed touring car racing unfolded as Todd Hazelwood delivered a flawless performance to secure victory in the storm-delayed Trans Am opening race at Sandown. Driving the number 1 Ford Mustang, he clawed back crucial championship points by crossing the finish line 2.25 seconds ahead of series leader Nathan Herne in his Chevrolet Camaro.
A fierce battle for the final podium spot also captivated fans as Blake Tracey claimed third place in his Mustang. Tracey successfully held off a hard-charging Jarrod Hughes, while Lachlan Evennett rounded out the top five fastest drivers in exceptionally challenging wet track conditions.
The race action was immediately marked by high drama following a 55-minute delay caused by a torrential downpour over the circuit. Ayrton Hodson, who stunned the field by taking pole position in his Trans Am debut, led the pack down to Turn 1 before standing water completely altered the early race dynamics.

Massive amounts of standing water on the approach to Turn 2 forced the field to tiptoe cautiously, where Hodson unfortunately ran wide at Turn 4. This mistake allowed Hazelwood to seize the lead and comfortably dictate the pace at the front of the field for the remainder of the race.
The treacherous track conditions claimed numerous victims throughout the event, featuring dramatic incidents involving several top-tier contenders during the chaotic closing laps. Following this thrilling opener, the Trans Am Cup Series is set to return on Sunday with two more races scheduled.
