The race weekend at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez has presented a stern test for Kimi Antonelli as he fights through physical illness and mounting psychological pressure in the closing stages of the Formula 1 season. The Italian driver admitted that he felt unusually tense and drained during qualifying for the Mexico City Grand Prix, largely driven by the relentless noise surrounding his potential world championship campaign.
Earlier in the day, Kimi Antonelli showed promising pace by finishing just 0.001s behind Lando Norris in FP3. However, the intensity of qualifying exposed his struggles to extract maximum grip from the tyres compared to Mercedes teammate George Russell, who opted for a direct flying lap strategy in Q3 that propelled him near the front of the grid before Lewis Hamilton clinched a sensational pole position for Ferrari.
Compounding his on-track challenges, the young charger has been battling a severe illness that forced him to skip media duties on Thursday due to a high fever and stomach issues. Although his physical condition is improving, he confessed to lacking sleep and energy, noting that the constant chatter about the championship has taken a mental toll.

"I feel very tired - I still haven't recovered completely and it hasn't been an easy weekend, to be fair," explained Kimi Antonelli. "I've definitely been a bit more tense than usual, especially when you keep hearing, wherever you go, any time of the day, the same thing. And people telling me that it's already done, and knowing myself, I've been trying to block as much as possible this noise."
Starting from fourth on the grid with a saved set of fresh tyres, the Mercedes driver remains optimistic about his prospects for Sunday's 71-lap encounter. While acknowledging Ferrari's superior race pace, his immediate priority will be navigating the treacherous long run down to Turn 1 safely and making forward progress.
