Technical Trouble Forces Lewis Hamilton to Reset Ahead of Crucial Practice

Lewis Hamilton does not believe Ferrari has an advantage in Mexico

The second practice session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez turned into a frustrating affair for Lewis Hamilton after his SF26 machine suffered a sudden power loss and ground to a halt on track. The premature end to the afternoon running robbed the British driver of vital data collection time as the team prepares for the remainder of the Grand Prix weekend.

Despite the apparent pace of the Scuderia machinery in Mexico City, the unexpected reliability setback has complicated the weekend preparations. Having opted to skip handing his car over to a rookie driver in the opening session, he spent the initial running executing aerodynamic rake evaluations, meaning track time has been at a premium.

"I was feeling really good in the car. I think we did a really good job in getting the set-up in a better place. Just really unfortunate," Lewis Hamilton said after stepping out of the cockpit. He further noted that engineers were still actively investigating the root cause of the failure while expressing hope that the remainder of the weekend runs smoothly.

Meanwhile, the Italian outfit's overall speed remained strong throughout Friday's running, with teammate Charles Leclerc topping both practice sessions. Addressing rival paddock claims that a smaller turbocharger grants the team an unfair advantage in the high-altitude conditions, the experienced driver firmly rejected the notion based on top-speed telemetry comparisons.

"I don’t really agree on the turbo thing. If you look at the speeds to the Mercedes and the Red Bull, they’re still quick at the end of the straights, like they are every race. So the turbo is just not making a difference," Lewis Hamilton concluded. With final practice looming, the focus now shifts entirely toward maximizing the package ahead of qualifying.
