An unexpected and nostalgic twist has hit the Supercars paddock as the #48 Team 18 Chevrolet Camaro has been officially fitted with the legendary 'Peter Brock Energy Polarizer'. This unorthodox move forms part of a special tie-up with the reborn Holden Dealer Team business, serving as a unique tribute to the nine-time Great Race winner on the 20th anniversary of his tragic passing.
The controversial device carries a fascinating history within Australian motorsport lore. The Polarizer is essentially a small box filled with specific crystals and magnets that was originally developed by Brock alongside Melbourne chiropractor Eric Dowker back in the mid-1980s. Influenced by Dowker’s unconventional theories, Brock firmly believed that the device could significantly enhance a vehicle's handling characteristics, overall performance, and fuel efficiency.
However, his unwavering insistence on fitting the scientifically unproven gadget to production HDT road cars ultimately resulted in Holden cutting all corporate ties with the motorsport icon in early 1987. Decades later, Team 18 has revived the famous Polarizer as a light-hearted yet deeply respectful nod to Brock's enduring legacy at Mount Panorama.
The Chevrolet homologation squad successfully received formal permission from Supercars management to have the Polarizer securely fitted inside the cockpit throughout the entire race weekend. Veteran drivers David Reynolds and James Courtney revealed the entertaining stunt to fans through a light-hearted social media video released on race week morning.
Meanwhile, the storied HDT brand was recently acquired by US-based Australian businessman and racer Kenny Habul, who is set to unveil major new strategic plans for the brand at Bathurst. The famous HDT logo is now proudly displayed on the rear quarter panels of the Team 18 Camaro, while the company also extends its support by sponsoring Garry Rogers Motorsport’s wildcard entry.
