Otmar Szafnauer, former Alpine Formula 1 team principal, has issued a stark warning about Cadillac's operational setup, claiming it is not built to win a world championship. The ex-team boss believes the team's split base between the UK and the US could be a fundamental flaw in their quest for glory.
Cadillac, General Motors' brand, entered F1 as the 11th team at the start of the 2026 season. While they established a European facility at Silverstone to tap into traditional motorsport talent, much of their design and simulation work is conducted in Indianapolis and South Carolina. Szafnauer shared his concerns on the High Performance Racing podcast with Jake Humphrey.
“I was with Pat Symonds [executive engineering consultant for Cadillac] on a flight recently, and Pat is working with or for Cadillac,” Szafnauer said. “Cadillac is building a base in Indianapolis. And I said to Pat, 'That's suboptimal. If, for example, you have the same talent of drivers that Mercedes has and if Cadillac produces the same performant power unit that Mercedes has and you understand vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics, the tyre as well as Mercedes do. The only difference is you've got some of your design team based in Silverstone and your aero guys, some of your design team based in Indianapolis and your simulation team in South Carolina. It's the only difference. Who's going to win? Mercedes.'”
He added: “He said, 'It's only suboptimal if you want to win the world championship.' So that's my point. First, the objective. If the objective is to make it more of an American team, then yes, build in Indianapolis and in South Carolina. But if your objective is to win the world championship, then you do everything it takes to win the world championship. And that ain't it.”
Since joining the grid, Cadillac has faced a steep learning curve, battling reliability issues and currently sitting 11th in the constructors' standings with zero points. With experienced drivers like Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez at the helm, the pressure to deliver results is mounting.
The split structure across two continents presents inherent challenges in communication and technical coordination. Top teams like Mercedes, Red Bull, and Ferrari typically centralize operations to accelerate development cycles. Cadillac aims to leverage expertise from both regions, but Szafnauer doubts its effectiveness at the sharp end of the grid.
His comments have sparked debate about whether Cadillac needs to rethink their approach if they are serious about becoming a dominant force in F1. With technical regulations constantly evolving, strategic decisions off-track can be as crucial as on-track performance. Only time will tell if Szafnauer's critique serves as a wake-up call or a prophecy.
