McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has revealed that his appearance at the FIA International Court of Appeal in Paris carries a "double intent." The statement follows the controversy at the Monaco Grand Prix, where several drivers were penalised for pit-lane speeding, only for it to emerge that the measuring device was off by 77 centimetres.
That technical error rendered the penalties invalid. Pierre Gasly, who appealed, had his penalty rescinded after Alpine presented new evidence deemed significant. However, other drivers such as Isack Hadjar (Red Bull), Oscar Piastri (McLaren), Liam Lawson, and Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls) lost positions because they had already served their penalties in-race, and regulations offer no mechanism to reverse them.
Stella explained that the first intent is broader than McLaren's own interest. "We believe the process after the Monaco race needs to be reviewed for the fairness of all competitors," he said. He added that the removal of Gasly's penalty raises serious concerns about the sport's integrity.
The second intent is McLaren's direct interest. "We not only have concerns, but we were also materially penalised for serving a penalty that is not appealable, and this even cost us championship points," Stella stressed. He hopes the hearing will provide clarity and restore the principle of fairness.
The decision to appeal came after Mercedes considered legal action but ultimately chose not to follow Red Bull and McLaren. The hearing at the FIA International Court of Appeal is expected to be a moment to address regulatory loopholes.
