Stella: F1 2026 Rules Disruptive for Norris and Piastri

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has described Formula 1’s 2026 regulations as “disruptive” for his drivers, while praising the adaptation of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to the sweeping changes in aerodynamics and power unit rules.

This year’s regulatory overhaul has forced drivers to significantly alter their driving styles. Several have complained about moving away from traditional techniques to extract maximum performance from the new-generation cars. Stella acknowledged the challenge but insisted his drivers have responded admirably.

“I am very pleased with how our driver line-up is performing in this early part of the 2026 season,” Stella said. “For Oscar and Lando – as indeed for their 20 colleagues on the F1 grid – the impact of the new regulations has been nothing short of disruptive.”

“The new generation of single-seaters requires not only an adaptation of driving style but, above all, much greater focus on understanding how to exploit the full potential offered by the new power units,” he added.

The most demanding challenge has been the new power unit, which features a significant boost in electrical output. Stella noted that reliability concerns added extra pressure. “The learning process has at times proved complicated and was slowed down, particularly in the early stages, by various reliability issues,” he explained.

“Both have responded in the right way, working with great commitment alongside the team, day in, day out. There is still room for improvement, particularly regarding the power unit, and we are working very well with our partners at HPP, including on the interaction between the driver and the power unit,” Stella concluded.

Stella’s comments come amid a tight battle at the front of the 2026 F1 standings. Norris and Piastri’s quick adaptation to the new rules is key to McLaren’s hopes of maintaining competitiveness against leading rivals.
