Stella Calls Wolff's Budget Cap Bluff: 3M Bonus Exists

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has responded skeptically to Toto Wolff's complaints about budget cap constraints at Mercedes. Stella believes Wolff is simply making excuses, as all teams have extra financial leeway ahead of the 2027 regulation changes.

During the Dutch Grand Prix, Wolff claimed Mercedes was struggling to bring upgrades due to limited funds, even suggesting the team would not introduce a major package until the Malaysian GP. Stella, however, considers this statement less than honest, pointing to a special provision that allows teams to use additional funds.

The 2027 regulations introduce significant changes to power units and chassis design. To ease the transition, each team has been granted an extra $3 million that can be counted against the 2026 budget cap. Stella is convinced Mercedes will take advantage of this loophole to accelerate their car development.

“Every team will have an extra amount of about three million available in their budget cap reporting for 2026. I am certain that Mercedes, seeing their rivals improving, will capitalize on the development ongoing at their factory,” Stella said, as reported by FormulaPassion.

Stella even believes Mercedes' wind tunnel car is currently much faster than the version on track. He predicts Wolff will soon convert that potential into real upgrades for their race car.

“I am almost sure they will bring updates. Of course, it would be better if they didn't, but I don't want to think about it too much,” he added cautiously.

Stella's remarks highlight the typical psychological dynamics among team principals. He aims to pressure his rival by questioning the credibility of Mercedes' financial complaints, while projecting McLaren's confidence in this season's title fight.
