Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner has made a bold prediction that Lando Norris will finish as runner-up in the 2026 Formula 1 drivers' championship. Norris, currently fourth in the standings, is tipped by Steiner to overtake George Russell if his impressive form continues.
Steiner's comments come after Norris delivered a string of strong performances, with two wins (Hungary and Netherlands) and three pole positions in the last four races. Despite a setback at the Spanish Grand Prix due to an ill-timed virtual safety car, Norris recovered to finish third in Madrid.
On The Red Flags Podcast, Steiner said, "He will be second if he continues like this. Look how happy the Lando boy is." Norris trails championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 106 points but is just five behind third-placed Lewis Hamilton and 25 adrift of Russell in second.
Norris himself believes he is performing at a higher level than ever. He described his pole lap at the Madring as "probably one of the best laps I've done ever in my career." He explained, "It's one of those laps when everything came together. I had a good idea of what I wanted to do, and my brain let me do it almost perfect."
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella also praised Norris's performance. He said, "It was a consequence of pushing to the level that Lando managed to push to. When you look at the telemetry, it is the precision, the braking, the speed carried on entry, the striking of the kerb, the going on power. Everything was executed with a pretty unique level of precision. I think Lando offered one of the best performances of his career."
With nine races remaining, the battle for second place is heating up. Norris will look to maintain his momentum, while Russell and Hamilton will not give up without a fight. If Steiner's prediction holds true, Norris will end the season as runner-up, a remarkable achievement given McLaren's difficult start to the year.
