Four-time world champion Max Verstappen has raised profound concerns regarding the condition of his spine following medical examinations. The Red Bull driver believes his physical health has been directly affected by the immense vertical forces endured when modern Formula 1 cars hit severe bumps on the track surface.
Despite recent resurfacing efforts and targeted repairs carried out by circuit organizers ahead of the race weekend, Verstappen remains completely unconvinced. His anxieties intensified significantly after witnessing the punishing levels of bouncing endured by competitors during the World Endurance Championship event back in September.
"From what I saw in WEC, it was extremely badly bumpy. I’m not really looking forward to that, to be honest, for your spine," Verstappen stated, emphasizing that the persistent issue has progressively gotten out of control despite drivers raising complaints for years.
The vertical loads experienced by drivers over these bumps often dwarf the lateral forces felt during standard cornering. Verstappen revealed experiencing vertical impacts exceeding 9G directly onto his spine, noting that the physical toll becomes increasingly worrying as a driver grows older.
"I can tell you from the checks that I’ve done from my spine, the bottom end of the spine doesn’t look that great," he admitted, warning that ongoing regulations and future car designs could make negotiating rough sections even more punishing for the human body.
