Oliver Solberg is keeping the heat on WRC leader Elfyn Evans after ending the first day with a lead of over 10 seconds. The two drivers traded blows throughout the day, delivering a thrilling battle that had fans on the edge of their seats.
Evans briefly led the rally after SS2, but Solberg responded immediately, reclaiming the top spot on SS3 before the service break. The Swedish driver then extended his advantage on the afternoon loop, capitalizing on his car's consistent performance on the challenging road surface.
For Evans, the day didn't go entirely to plan. Although he admitted his afternoon pace wasn't as strong as he'd hoped, the Toyota driver remained pleased with his overall position. "Obviously, the pace in the afternoon perhaps wasn't quite as good as I would have liked. It still felt pretty good behind the wheel, but the guys behind seemed to be coming quite quickly," Evans said. "Fortunately, most of the work was already done in the morning, when we managed to secure a good position and a good starting place for Saturday."
Evans also highlighted the challenges of being first on the road. Nevertheless, he was reluctant to blame the car's setup entirely. "I don't know whether we had the perfect set-up throughout the day. At times, I was slightly unhappy with the balance of the car. But it certainly didn't feel bad," he explained. "I was actually quite brave. But I don't know how much of it is down to the road and how much is because I'm doing something wrong myself."
Meanwhile, Solberg was pleased with his day. "I don't think we lost much at all to the other guys or Elfyn in the afternoon. We extended the gap to more than 10 seconds, so it went pretty well," he said. "I was just expecting the tyres to wear a little more on the first stage of the afternoon, so I drove slightly cautiously. But after the stage, the tyres were practically like new. The road surface looked extremely abrasive, but in the end it wasn't."
A 10-second lead is far from comfortable, especially with tyre wear expected to be a major factor on Saturday. "With the tyres set to make things difficult on Saturday, we won't have to take the most extreme risks. But it's a long day and anything can happen to anyone," added Solberg. "I think that, especially in the afternoon if it's hot and dry, with these tyres it could beg you never know."
The championship standings add another layer of intrigue. Evans still leads, but his biggest threat, Sami Pajari, is currently fifth in the rally. That gives Evans a bit of breathing room, but he knows consistency will be key. "I'm pretty happy overall. But I'm sure there are some places where the others are able to find time," Evans concluded.
With a long rally still ahead, the duel between Solberg and Evans is expected to intensify. Both have shown solid pace, and with conditions likely to change, tyre strategy and risk management will be crucial. Can Solberg hold on, or will Evans fight back to reclaim the top spot? Only time will tell.
