Oliver Solberg delivered a commanding performance at Rally Sweden, holding the lead after Saturday morning's loop. His teammate Elfyn Evans was closing in, but Solberg responded with the fastest time on the final stage to extend his advantage to 10.1 seconds.
"I think the morning was pretty decent. Yesterday's stages were new to everyone, but this is the first time I have driven today's stages in this car. It is quite a different situation," Solberg said. "I know very well how to look after the tyres in a Rally2 car, but it is completely different in a car like this. I think I was a little too cautious with the tyres on the first two stages."
Ominously for his rivals, Solberg appeared to get to grips with the tyres and the car towards the end of the loop, so he looks set to push harder in the afternoon. "On the final stage, though, I began to understand a little better how to use the tyres. I tried to drive cleanly for most of the stage and then attacked really hard on the downhill section. We regained a little of the gap there, so that was positive."
Evans, meanwhile, felt the car's set-up was slightly off during the morning loop. "I'm not completely satisfied with the morning. There were places where we could perhaps have performed a little better. We struggled slightly with the car on some sections and stages," Evans said. "We made some small changes for the final stage, and the car already felt a little better there."
Evans, known for his precision, remains a threat, but with Solberg growing more comfortable, the pressure is mounting. Rally Sweden is one of the iconic events on the WRC calendar, and Solberg's performance here highlights his potential as a serious contender.
With the rally far from over, the duel between the two Toyota drivers is expected to intensify. Solberg is clearly determined to seize his opportunity, while Evans must find a solution to his car's setup if he wants to stay in the fight.
