The 2026 Formula 1 season presents a unique challenge for Sergio Perez as he navigates his debut campaign with the new Cadillac Racing squad amidst various technical hurdles and a lack of points.
At a quick glance at the standings, the Mexican driver's campaign might be classified by some as disastrous, given that the team has yet to score a championship point. However, near misses such as his strong run in Monaco prior to a penalty show that final results do not always tell the full story.
Performances in Baku and Singapore highlighted a strong competitive pace that outshined equipment limitations, including a dominant stint over teammate Valtteri Bottas that failed to translate into a points finish.
Speaking exclusively to Motorsport.com, Perez firmly rejected the notion that 2026 is his worst season in the sport. "In terms of results, obviously, but I think people who understand the sport can see the level at which I am driving and the level I've been maintaining, the performance I've delivered, and they can understand the caliber of the year I've had," he stated.
For the first time in his career, Perez has embraced the role of building a project from scratch, steering car development and tackling reliability issues alongside the engineering staff, elevating his leadership responsibilities significantly.
"I think one of my best years. Without a doubt, in terms of confidence, driving level, decision-making, leadership, without a doubt one of my best years," he concluded regarding his evaluation of the current campaign.
