Sami Pajari capped off a stellar second season in the WRC top class by coming agonizingly close to a historic world championship crown. Securing three rally victories and nine podium finishes in a single campaign would have easily sealed a title under previous regulations. However, the modern points system places a heavy premium on Sunday performances, altering the championship equation entirely.
The young Finnish driver finished just six points shy of the title and a single point behind Oliver Solberg in a remarkably tight battle that went down to the wire. Such razor-thin margins highlight how crucial every single stage has become in contemporary rallying.
"At one point I thought I could fight for the title, and the opportunity opened up. Of course, we tried to go for it, but we couldn’t quite manage it," Pajari reflected to RallyJournal.

Despite missing out on the ultimate prize, claiming nine podiums in just his sophomore year at the pinnacle of the sport is a massive achievement. The decisive factor proved to be the Sunday standings, where he lost crucial ground to champion Elfyn Evans and Solberg by a significant margin.
Early in the year, playing it safe for podiums took precedence over all-or-nothing risks, a pragmatic approach that ultimately kept him in the hunt until the final meters of the season.
