Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon offered contrasting responses when questioned about their futures with Williams Racing amid a difficult start to the 2026 season for the Grove-based team.
Williams entered the new Formula 1 regulation cycle targeting a significant competitive step, but collected only 11 points across the opening seven rounds. Sainz and Albon have been left managing a car that is overweight and lacking aerodynamic efficiency, two limitations that have restricted its pace and reduced the team’s ability to compete consistently.
The situation has generated questions over the direction of Williams’ driver line-up beyond the current season. Asked at the Austrian Grand Prix whether he was beginning to explore opportunities elsewhere, Sainz insisted that his immediate attention remained on the development work required at Williams.

“Not really. I’m not, because I have so much work to do here in Williams right now over the next few races and the amount of simulator sessions we’re doing, the amount of meetings that are being held over the last few months,” Sainz said.
The Spaniard revealed that he had asked his management team to reduce outside distractions until the summer break. His objective is to remain focused on simulator work, technical meetings and efforts to improve Williams’ competitive position before assessing how the driver market develops.
Sainz acknowledged that the summer break would provide a more appropriate opportunity to review the options available. However, he stressed that his priority is to continue with the Williams project next season and said the team already understands his intentions.
Albon adopted a considerably more guarded position. Asked whether he had a contract in place for next year, the Thai driver replied: “I’ll keep that to myself.” When pressed to confirm whether he would remain at Williams, he again declined to provide clarity and said: “I’ll stay quiet on that.”
The difference in their answers does not confirm an impending change to the line-up, but it demonstrates contrasting communication positions. Sainz openly identified Williams as his priority while delaying any wider assessment until the summer, whereas Albon chose not to disclose his contractual status while the car’s performance remains the team’s central concern.
Williams now faces two connected challenges: addressing the car’s weight and aerodynamic-efficiency weaknesses while giving both drivers confidence that the 2026 project retains a credible competitive direction. Progress before the summer break will be important in determining whether the discussion remains centred on performance recovery or shifts further towards the future of the team’s driver pairing.
