Carlos Sainz has accused Fernando Alonso of influencing the stewards through emotional radio messages, which led to a five-second penalty for the Williams driver after a collision at the Turn 5-6 chicane on Lap 12 of the Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring.

The incident occurred as Alonso, driving for Aston Martin, attempted to attack Sainz around the outside in the battle for P17. Sainz, in the Williams, moved across, causing contact between the two. Alonso immediately complained over the radio, saying "He squeezed me into the wall" after sustaining front wing damage.

Sainz felt Alonso exaggerated the incident and believed Alonso's radio communications swayed the stewards. "Nothing to say, really," Sainz told media. "It's the nature of that corner when you turn right, and I think he complained on the radio, so he managed to get me a penalty."

The Spanish driver added that the corner is prone to contact as there is only space for one car. "You cannot keep looking in your mirror while you're turning and looking and doing a right-left because you need to look forward. So at one point you need to focus on your own driving line, and I don't think Fernando was alongside me or anything."

On the other hand, Alonso was satisfied with the stewards' decision. "He had a penalty, so if they consider that enough, it's good for me," Alonso said. "We didn't finish any of the two in the points, but I think that was unnecessary. There was plenty of room on the left. I was just on the wall on the right, 340 kph; I think it was not needed."

This incident adds to the long history of fierce rivalry between the two Spanish drivers, who have often clashed on track. However, both Sainz and Alonso failed to score points in this closely fought race, with Sainz finishing 17th and Alonso 18th after the incident.

With this result, Sainz remains 10th in the drivers' standings with 12 points, while Alonso is 14th with 6 points. Both will look to bounce back at the next race in the Canadian Grand Prix.
