George Russell ended the first day of the Madrid Grand Prix with a cautious tone. After topping FP1, the Mercedes driver had to settle for fifth in FP2, over three-tenths adrift of teammate Kimi Antonelli. But Russell's focus was not on the time difference, but on the characteristics of the Madring circuit, which is hosting its first Formula 1 race.
Worrying Tyre Degradation
Speaking to reporters in Madrid, Russell highlighted the main concern: extremely high tyre degradation. “It's definitely a high-risk circuit and I think all drivers are giving themselves a margin of safety today; we'll see tomorrow,” he said. “Tyre wear? We anticipated that; it often happens with new asphalt. The grip is very high, but you slide quite a lot. With the configuration used in FP1, a race with six pit stops would have been the fastest strategy,” he added, half-jokingly but perhaps not. “The situation improved slightly in FP2 and I'm sure it will be better in the race on Sunday, but this remains the main question mark.”
High degradation could be the only way to see some action on track on Sunday. “Overtaking? I think it will be very difficult,” Russell stated. “If we were to see the level of tyre degradation from FP1, things would be a bit easier, but yes, it will still be tough.”
Reading the Opportunities at a New Circuit
Madring, located in the heart of Madrid, immediately presents a unique challenge: close walls and a narrow track. Russell pointed out that the risk of accidents is very high, especially in practice sessions. “I think all drivers are still finding the limit,” he added. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic that Mercedes can compete, especially with Mercedes showing promising speed in FP1.
Competition at the front will be fierce. Kimi Antonelli, who replaced Lewis Hamilton, impressed by beating Russell in FP2. This could signal that Mercedes has a strong package in Madrid, but long-run consistency is still in question given the tyre degradation.
With only limited data from the new circuit, strategy will be key. Teams must decide whether to sacrifice starting position for more durable tyres or chase qualifying speed. Russell stressed that his main priority is to understand tyre behaviour on a track that is still “green”.
The Madrid GP will be the real test. If Russell's prediction holds true, we might witness a race full of pit stops and tactical battles, rather than just a pure speed contest. And for the fans, that could be an unexpected spectacle.
