George Russell has thrown down the gauntlet for Italian Grand Prix pole position at Monza, topping Free Practice 3 with Lewis Hamilton his nearest challenger.
The Mercedes driver set a 1:22.219 benchmark in the final hour, edging out Hamilton's Ferrari by a slender margin. Max Verstappen completed the top three in a tightly contested session where only a few tenths covered the leading pack.
Slipstream Games and Late Drama
With drivers hunting precious tows down Monza's straights, most of the action unfolded in the second half. Kimi Antonelli initially set the pace but will face a grid penalty for an engine change, dampening his qualifying prospects.
Russell's flying lap was aided by a tow from Antonelli through Curva Grande, while Hamilton used Oscar Piastri's McLaren to slot into second. The seven-time champion aborted his first soft-tyre run after going purple in sector one, but made no mistake on his second attempt.
Stewards Busy Ahead of Qualifying
Verstappen was noted for an incident with Hamilton at Turn 1, after a late divebomb following a perceived grievance at Parabolica. The Red Bull driver's move will be reviewed by the stewards.
Williams duo Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon face investigation for yellow flag infringements, while Russell escaped sanction for allegedly impeding Piastri at Lesmo 1. Qualifying kicks off later this afternoon, with the battle for pole wide open.
