George Russell has rediscovered his best form at Zandvoort. The Mercedes driver converted sprint pole into a sprint win before securing second on the grid for the Dutch Grand Prix. It is a timely boost after a tough run before the summer break.
Russell admitted that feeling comfortable in the car was key to his resurgence. “I feel like myself again, which is really important,” he said. The impressive display also trimmed his points deficit to teammate Kimi Antonelli in the intra-team battle.
Despite narrowly missing pole, Russell had to settle for a tenth behind a stellar Lando Norris. Still, he was pleased with the session. “Lando did a great job, congrats to him and McLaren. It was a strong session,” Russell commented.
More crucially, Russell feels his performance is back to a high level after several disappointing races. The cooler track conditions at Zandvoort made it even more enjoyable. “It was a real joy to drive around here, the track felt really fast,” he added.
Starting from second, Russell has a strong chance to fight for victory in the main race. The battle with Norris and others is expected to be intense, given the track conditions that favor pure speed.
Russell's resurgence is also a positive signal for Mercedes. The German squad looks increasingly competitive as the season winds down, and if this form continues, they could become a serious threat to McLaren and Red Bull in the constructors' championship.
