The noise cut through the mid-summer night in Jyvaskyla, Finland. A block away, on the corner of Urhonkatu, a policeman smiled as a Toyota GR Supra made its way out of the city. The car wasn't just driving; it was sideways, almost 90 degrees to the direction of travel, rear tires ablaze. The hometown hero, Kalle Rovanpera, was truly back in town.
When DirtFish spoke to Rovanpera during Rally Finland, he mentioned an interesting project on the horizon. That project is now reality: a video titled "Dream Run." Released the day after most of the WRC paddock left the city—though Takamoto Katsuta, Roope Korhonen, Juha Kankkunen, and Harri Rovanpera lingered—the city braced for something extraordinary.
For Rovanpera Jr., this was a chance to pay homage to his urban heroes. Growing up watching Ken Block build his Gymkhana legend and Mad Mike drift around the world, he was inspired to create something similar. Over a year in the making, with full backing from the City of Jyvaskyla, the project became a dream drive for the champion.
"The first idea came a few years ago," Rovanpera told DirtFish. "It took time to really get into planning. A year ago we started properly, and from zero to finished product took about a year. Filming itself was three full days and nights. As a whole, this is a dream project because you'd never otherwise get to drive and drift in places like this."
Rovanpera combined all the elements he loves, working with director Niko Hirvimaki, a car guy with great ideas. "It felt really nice to be drifting around Jyvaskyla. All the locations we picked were dream places to drift. At first we were hesitant about getting permission, but in the end we got all the places we wanted. It was really cool to drive with all the roads closed and everything in place—I have to say a big thank you to the police and everybody for making this happen."
The film was shot between Laukaa and Jyvaskyla, including the Tourula ramp, an intersection between the E63 and E75, two of central Finland's main roads. This ramp curves and cambers beautifully. It's been driven by Rovanpera hundreds of times in road cars, World Rally Cars, Rally1 cars, and on his way to a famous Rally Finland victory in 2025. But it's never been driven like this: full throttle, tires smoking, Supra dancing on asphalt.
This project is more than just a drifting video. It's a celebration of car culture, a tribute to history, and proof that passion for speed can unite a community. Rovanpera, known as one of the most talented rally drivers of his generation, shows another side: a car enthusiast who grew up on Gymkhana VHS tapes and now creates his own legacy. Dream Run isn't just about drifting; it's about dreams coming true.
With full support from the city and overwhelming enthusiasm, Dream Run proves that motorsport is not just competition—it's art and expression. Rovanpera has added a new chapter to his life story, and we're all invited to watch.
