The fierce battle between Ferrari team-mates Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc at Monza's first chicane has ignited a heated debate among analysts. Nico Rosberg and Martin Brundle offered contrasting verdicts on who was most at fault for the incident that forced Hamilton off track and later led to Leclerc's heavy crash at Parabolica.
The clash occurred as the two Scuderia drivers fought hard for third place. Hamilton attempted a bold late dive down the inside under braking, while Leclerc held his ground on the outside for the following left-hander. The result was Hamilton being squeezed onto the gravel and dropping down the order, worsening Ferrari's nightmare start.
Brundle: Leclerc Not at Fault
Sky Sports F1 analyst Martin Brundle was quick to defend Leclerc, stating that the Monegasque was far enough ahead at the apex and should not be penalized. "Lewis made a bold move, but Charles was ahead," Brundle said. He also suggested that Leclerc may have struggled with front tyre temperatures, causing understeer—a normal occurrence on the first lap.
Rosberg: Clear Rule, 100% Leclerc's Fault
However, Nico Rosberg disagreed. The 2016 world champion insisted that the rules are straightforward: if the driver on the outside, in this case Hamilton, is ahead at the apex, the inside driver must leave room. "Lewis was ahead going in, so Charles had to leave room. It's 100 percent Charles' fault. The rule is clear, written in black and white, even on page 11," Rosberg said jokingly.
Rosberg also acknowledged Hamilton's aggression, admitting, "That's true. Lewis was too aggressive." His comments highlight the complexity of the incident, where both drivers contributed to the outcome.
The differing views add spice to the rivalry between the two former competitors, while for Ferrari, the home disaster is a nightmare they need to quickly forget, especially with the season pressure mounting.
