The frustration of Lando Norris at the Spanish Grand Prix still sparks heated debate. 2016 F1 world champion Nico Rosberg has weighed in, proposing changes to the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) rules to prevent similar injustices.
The inaugural race at the Madring circuit became a stage for drama. Starting from pole, the McLaren driver built a solid lead over Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli. But when a VSC was deployed to recover Lance Stroll's stranded Aston Martin, Norris had just passed the pit entry. The chance for a cheap pit stop vanished, while his rivals seized the moment. Consequently, Norris lost the lead and finished third behind Antonelli and Max Verstappen.
Rosberg, now a Sky Sports F1 pundit, highlighted the fundamental flaw of the VSC. He pointed out that during a VSC, the time lost in a pit stop is much less because all cars are driving slowly. "The problem is during a VSC, the pitstop time lost is so much less because everybody on track is driving so slowly, so by going in the pits you lose a lot less race time, and that is the big problem, why then it becomes unfair," he said on The F1 Show.
He offered two concrete solutions. First, closing the pitlane during a VSC. "Either the pitlane stays closed during a VSC, which then doesn't give anybody the opportunity to take advantage during it," Rosberg explained. Second, drastically reducing the pitlane speed limit during a VSC. "Or even why not something like: during a VSC, the pitlane speed limit gets reduced massively because it's all about the time lost during a pitstop," he added.
Rosberg acknowledged that luck is part of racing. "No, it's just really unlucky. That's the way it is. And it swings and roundabouts with the VSC and safety car deployments. You're always going to have good luck or bad luck. It's always horrible when that happens because he deserved to win, and it sucks that he lost it just because of a VSC," he said.
Nevertheless, Rosberg stressed that the VSC remains a good solution to avoid boring laps behind the safety car. "We hate seeing cars going round and round behind a safety car. It's the most boring thing in the world of motorsport. And that's why the VSC has been brought in," he stated. He hopes his ideas will be explored further.
This incident adds to the list of VSC controversies in the 2026 season. Previously, several drivers have been disadvantaged by unfavourable VSC timing. If the rules are changed, it will certainly affect team strategies and competitive balance. However, there has been no official statement from the FIA or Formula 1 regarding Rosberg's proposal. Clearly, the debate over VSC fairness will continue in the paddock.
