Aprilia CEO Massimo Rivola has questioned comments suggesting the cancellation of the Australian Grand Prix main race at Phillip Island due to severe weather is a major boost for Jorge Martin's championship aspirations. Poor track visibility forced organisers to scrap Sunday's final race, locking the championship gap between contenders at 10 points following Saturday's intense sprint action.
The cancellation came as a relative reprieve after Martin suffered a wrist fracture in a heavy crash, an incident that initially threatened to let Marc Marquez pull away significantly in the 2026 standings. With the points gap frozen, the championship battle remains tightly contested despite the physical setbacks faced by the championship contender ahead of the flyaway rounds.
Addressing the paddock during a weekend marked by scheduling uncertainty, Rivola reflected on the logistical hurdles and safety calls made by authorities. "On the one hand, there's much more to say; on the other, simply do what we're told," Rivola stated on Sunday, as reported by Crash.net. He emphasized that the outfit relies entirely on official assessments regarding track safety and racing conditions rather than speculating on sporting fairness.

Regarding the immediate future and the upcoming trip to Sepang, Rivola admitted that a racing comeback remains a formidable challenge. "I don't know if that's good or bad for Jorge, because if he's not physically fit, it's not good. But it's not up to us to decide that," he noted, while evaluating the steep physical demands required to pilot a premier class prototype at full speed.
Concluding his remarks, the team boss praised the exceptional speed displayed during the sprint and vowed unwavering support until the final checkered flag of the season drops. "Yesterday he put on an incredible show. We saw the real Jorge, and I think he had a chance to win the race. But we can say that sometimes bad things happen. We haven't had much luck with him, but we certainly won't give up until this is over," he declared. Read our in-depth analysis and stay updated with the latest paddock news right here on Sportrik.
