Scott Redding has revealed that the biggest difference between himself and Marc Marquez on their path to MotoGP wasn't talent, but the financial backing each received. Now racing in the British Superbike Championship, Redding believes that early support from giants like Repsol and Red Bull made all the difference.
Speaking on the Scruff Bags podcast, Redding recalled their battles in the 125cc and 250cc classes. He noted that in 2008, while he was on a third-tier team winning the British Grand Prix, Marquez was riding a factory Repsol KTM. "That was the difference, he had a lot of funding behind him," he said.
Redding stressed that the British passport is often used as an excuse, but the real issue is a lack of support from domestic companies. "I don't think the British passport is all of it. I think the passport is the name people give it as an excuse as to why we don't do more for our riders," Redding stated.
Britain hasn't produced a premier class world champion since Barry Sheene in 1977. Currently, there are no full-time British riders in MotoGP or Moto2, with only Eddie O'Shea and Scott Ogden representing in lower classes. This highlights the weak grassroots system and financial backing for young British talents.
According to Redding, proper financial support can pave a smoother path for talented riders, as seen with Marquez. He hopes British companies will invest more in local talent to avoid falling further behind other nations.
